Scarlet Eggplant Seeds

Scarlet Eggplant Seeds Solanum aethiopicum

Out of stock

Also known as jil√≥, Gilo or garden egg, and originally a West African native, the Scarlet Eggplant has become quite naturalised throughout the America’s and Europe, especially Brazil.
Like most of the Aubergine family it is a short lived perennial and will happily produce for several years.
It can comfortably grow to 1.5m tall with a 1m spread but we keep ours well pruned to encourage the lateral fruiting branches.
Probably because it seems to take so very long for the fruit to change from green to red, it is often picked and eaten when the fruit is quite green.
Green fruit has an interesting taste and picking frequently can double the yield of the plant.

They are one of the few aubergines that you do not need to work at to make enjoyable.
They are frost tender but will survive a frosty winter to pick up again in Spring.
